FRANZ LISZT (1811-1886). IN THE FATEFUL SUMMER OF 1835, FRANZ LISZT AND THE COUNTESS MARIE D' AGOULT FLED THE HEAT AND GOSSIP OF PARIS FOR THE PAYS ROMANTIQUE, SWITZERLAND, THE SPIRITUAL HOMELAND OF THE EARLY ROMANTIC ARTISTS. PROFOUNDLY INSPIRED BY THE MAGNIFICENT POETIC DESCRIPTIONS OF NATURE OF DE SENANCOUR, LISZT SOON PRODUCED A GROUP OF PIECES ON SWISS THEMES WHICH HE CALLED ANNEE DE PELERINAGE: SUISSE (YEAR OF PILGRIMAGE: SWITZERLAND). IN HIS PREFACE, THE COMPOSER REMARKS, "I HAVE TRIED TO GIVE MUSICAL UTTERANCE TO SOME OF MY STRONGEST SENSATIONS, SOME OF MY LIVELIEST IMPRESSIONS...AS INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC PROGRESSES...IT WILL CEASE TO BE A MERE COMBINATION OF SOUNDS AND WILL BECOME A POETIC LANGUAGE MORE APT THAN POETRY ITSELF PERHAPS AT EXPRESSING THAT WITHIN OUR SOULS WHICH TRANSCENDS THE COMMON HORIZON, ALL THAT ELUDES ANALYSIS, ALL THAT MOVES IN HIDDEN DEPTHS OF IMPERISHABLE DESIRE AND INFINITE INTUITION". THE PIANO CONCERTO No.1 IN E-FLAT MAJOR WAS FIRST PERFORMED IN 1855 AT WEIMAR; FEW PREMIERES CAN HAVE BEEN MORE AUSPICIOUS. UNFORTUNATELY, AT THE VIENNA PREMIERE THE CONSERVATIVE CRITIC HANSLICK ATTACKED IT SCATHINGLY, PARTICULARLY THE USE OF THE TRIANGLE, AND GENERAL APPRECIATION CAME ONLY YEARS LATER. THE GLITTERING INTENSITY OF THE ORCHESTRATION (PARTICULARLY THE PERCUSSION AND BRASS PARTS) WAS QUITE NEW IN THE 1850s, ESPECIALLY FOR A PIANO CONCERTO, AND OWES SOMETHING TO BERLIOZ. WRITTEN IN FOUR INGENIOUSLY LINKED SECTIONS TO FORM ONE LARGE MOVEMENT, THE WORK USES THEMATIC TRANSFORMATION AS ITS FORMAL PRINCIPLE, ALONG WITH SYMMETRICAL KEY RELATIONSHIPS.REWRITTEN SEVERAL TIMES, THE THEMES FIRST APPEAR IN LISZT'S NOTEBOOK OF 1830.
